How do you start a social entrepreneurship to promote our amazing National Parks? You find a need and fill it. John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt, among others, started what has been called "America's Best Idea". To help continue those ideas of stewardship and to promote the spirit of parks, we created National Park Geek in August of 2015. The goal of National Park Geek is to raise awareness of our parks, the issues that face them and to inspire everyone to cherish and visit. As apart of the community, we share images through social media, have and on-line store and host hiking / photo meetups in various parks throughout the year.
We are members of 1% for the Planet and donate 1% of all sales to park charities.
Social media is the main marketing component. Started on Instagram in September 2015 and now have over +130K followers.
All designs are created by the Department of Nature from concept to finished products. Currently we are selling in 68 National Park stores throughout the USA.
In September of 2017, I was approached by Michelin USA to tell the story of their partnership with Yellowstone National Park and the non-profit Yellowstone Forever. They have been working with them for 10 years on sustainable issues and building new pathways from recycled tires in the Old Faithful area. We were brought out to Yellowstone to tell this story on my social media channels. As a social influencer, the combined posts had over +801K impressions to help share the word of this awesome partnership between an international corporation and the park.
